I made this model for a game we made for the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds during my second semester at Abertay. It was the first time I was making a bird so needless to say this was a valuable learning experience. I greatly benefited from being able to hold actual taxidermized ospreys in my hands and inspect them up close thanks to the McManus museum in Dundee.
The brief was to make a model that balanced realism and stylization. Given the importance of the birds accurate representation to the clients, I chose to keep the anatomy as realistic as I could while going more stylized with the texturing to align with the rest of the game
I sculpted and retopologized the Osprey in Blender, used Marmoset Toolbag 4 for baking and Substance for hand-painting the textures
This was a hero asset and was seen up-close for the entirety of the game
The final game asset was just below 40k tries
My second attempt at this would see me making more than one change, but if I were to do one thing completely differently, that would be the feathers.
